‘Hello Again . . .’ Two old friends from their London days of 1971/1972 – Berry and Emma - meet again by accident in Oxford Street, London, England on an April morning 1990. He is a New Zealander and she is South African of Dutch/British parentage. Berry is a journalist and in a sense a failed author as no one wants to publish his latest book 'Shadows in the Valley'. He meets Emma while on his way to meet a literary agent and she is job hunting. They have morning tea and agree to meet later that day, going back to Berry’s basement flat. Although engaged to marry in their earlier London days, Emma (an attractive biology/history teacher) falls pregnant in a clandestine relationship to a Canadian lawyer of which Berry knows nothing. The pregnancy is discovered by Emma’s stepmother Maggie who in confronting Emma about her betrayal to Berry, forces her to marry the lawyer and flies to Canada. As part of the emotional aftermath of Emma’s pregnancy and marriage, the stepmother Maggie, Berry’s would-be mother-in-law, embark on their own secret affair that lasts for three years until Berry meets and marries a nurse, Deborah. This part of the story is told in a flashback episode. Emma and Berry, finding they still have a thing for each other, go to his flat where she starts cleaning up and makes lunch. They make love, after which they discuss the past, and how their marriages and relationships failed and how they come to be back in London at that particular time. The growing relationship and trust is fractured three days later after Emma’s probing uncovers the relationship between Berry and Maggie. Emma, faced with the betrayal that haunted their past finds it returning to haunt their future hopes; she flees in a distraught state of mind without knowing the truth behind the Berry-Maggie affair. In a fashion, they get on with their lives, subconsciously knowing they are in reality living on an empty stage, busying themselves and maintaining a façade of being happy when all it needs is a meeting and a discussion to find each other again. How they achieve this and happily resume their lives twenty years later is how two people find each other again with a deeper, stronger love and with it a lifetime commitment.
