In 1993 a relatively obscure psychotherapist from Birmingham, Alabama, self published a spiritual adventure novel in an effort to make a complex metaphysical worldview more accessible to his clients and other seekers of truth about the human potential. James Redfield and his partner-wife Salle then peddled the trade paperback book to independent and alternative bookstores throughout the South. They gave half of the first printing of 3,000 copies to any bookseller who would agree to read it. The word of mouth on THE CELESTINE PROPHECY quickly spread, and the Redfields sold 100,000 copies on their own before Warner Books published the hardback edition in 1994 and made it the best-selling American book in the world in 1995 and 1996. Today there are more than 12 million copies of THE CELESTINE PROPHECY in print in more than fifty languages around the world. James Redfield had authored a book that readers of The New York Times chose as their #1 All-Time Favorite in Religion, Spirituality, and Philosophy. With millions of people worldwide discussing the nine Insights that are so dramatically presented in the novel, Hollywood moviemakers rushed to secure the film rights. The Redfields, however, were never satisfied that the book’s purpose would be faithfully honored, so they waited for the combination of intuition and synchronicity that were so elemental to the Celestine vision to guide them in the development of a movie based on the book. After more than a decade, the realization of their dreams came into being; and in March, 2004 the principal filming of THE CELESTINE PROPHECY began in the tropical forest of Washington Oaks State Gardens south of St. Augustine, Florida. This making-of-the-movie book is a documentary vision of the people and places that came together to fulfill James Redfield’s fidelity of purpose; but, moreover, it is a complementary experience that leads the reader through the nine Insights as the familiar characters from the novel come to discover them. Here then is the amazing documentation of a movie that matters. From pre-production to the final wrap and editing, here are the producers, the director, actors, and crew caught in the moviemaking process. With production stills, production design artwork and frames from the movie here, too, is a narrative of the spiritual journey that Matthew Settle, as John, takes for us and with us. In this regard, the making of the movie book is an inspiring visual companion to THE CELESTINE PROPHECY itself. The large format hardback movie book with Monty’s narrative and interviews contains over 160 color photos, production artwork, and frames from the film that he also edited.
