|I've slept alone,
standing, sitting, lying on the ground...
alone in public places,
at the beach, in the park,
and in the church yard
I've slept with friends, families, and strangers:
at home, in inns, hotels, hostels, great houses,
guest houses, rented houses,
at work so exhausted.
For a split second,
I've slept steering behind my wheels
my companion unaware.
On the public transport, and at the airport too.
Ooh my maiden trans-alantic flight in luxury slept
with the fear of terror looming large and near
I've slept free of the mental institutions
that seemed more concerned with promoting psychotic drugs
that have forgotten the science of psycho-therapy
and are therefore best described as prisons for the mind
I've slept in those God awful
nursing homes for the elderly
in that decrepit public shelter
with vagabonds, and the poorest of the poor
...now all alone, on the ground,
not with a sleeping bag, nor sleep-sack
but buoyed with black plastic bags, and
covered with a checkered stole of blue, black, lilac and green, super-imposed upon by the vast hue
of the inky midnight blue.
