| SYNOPSIS: An outdoorsman's journal of building a log cabin, the hard way, and the adventure of doing what really matters.
In the spring of 2001, Len McDougall packed a grubstake and a vanload of hand tools and mostly-scrounged building supplies and scraps, liquidated all traces of his town life, and went deep into the woods on tribal land on Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Pitching a tent to tide him over until the roof was up, he began the arduous task that was to consume the next fifteen months of his life. Almost entirely out of touch with the modern world except for infrequent trips to town to buy tools and supplies, using only the materials available on site and what he could carry or drag in on foot, he cut a few trees with his axe, dug a ten-foot open well using only a shovel, built his own cabin using only his axe and hand tools, and lived a year in splendid isolation. He had no cell phone, no electricity, no computer, no distractions of civilization -- his sole connection was the radio, which he used sparingly, and the occasional short visit from friends. After recreating the rugged life of an 1800s frontiersman for a full cycle of the seasons, McDougall finally returned to the hubbub of Petoskey, Michigan. An intriguing narrative of self-reliance redolent with a rugged individualism that hasn't yet entirely vanished from the fabric of American life, and suffused with a deep love for nature and its creatures, The Log Cabin is both the journal of that adventure and a guidebook for making your own retreat.
