Through the eyes of young Eyo, we take an amusement ride along an all-pervasive culture of greed and cultural buffoonery which permeate a modern African (Koloko) society lacking in self-direction and discipline. Stories like 'Old Wives' Quarrels' and 'A Village Gossip' amuse us by the sheer ribaldry of the narrative and the keen sense of humor with which the narrator treats his characters. It is easy to see how, despite the exuberence of the narrative, the stories cannot really qualify as childhood stories of innocence. Beside the narrator's two companions, his other associations revolve around elders who, instead of commanding respect or innocent admiration, are rather described with such raillery that their every action taken with the best of ego justification no more than cast grotesque relief on the canvas of the narrator's consciousness. Although Eyo does not provide ready solutions to what is ironically a collective failure, his ability to see through the chicanery of his people and make personal choices over group allegiance is a reassuring hope for his people and society.
