A novel based on the life of a South African child, living in the apartheid era. Following a violent crime against her, the girl was ostracized by her right-wing family, who were also extreme religious fundamentalists. She developed a close, yet forbidden, relationship with their African housemaid as well as her schoolteacher.
The novel takes you through her formative years to adulthood, on route encountering the low value put on life in South and southern Africa, police corruption, unspoken family violence, and crime.
This book has strong political undertones, encompassing the consequences of apartheid, the challenges of what was perceived to be her destiny as well as several life changing events including the death of her first husband, the disasters of her second marriage and family murder.
