| This hardcover, full-color book tells the story of New York City's unique Jewish
community—how it grew from the original 23 Sephardic Jewish settlers who arrived in
New Amsterdam from Dutch South America in 1654 into the world's largest, most affluent,
and most influential Jewish community. Covered in words and photos are New York's affluent German-Jewish "Our Crowd"; the more than 1 million impoverished eastern European Jews who flooded into New York City from 1881 to 1924; the "Levantine" Jews who brought their distinctive Jewish culture to New York City from Mediterranean lands, including Greece, Syria, the Balkans, and Bulgaria; and the latter-day immigrants, including refugees from Hitler's Germany and from the lands of the former Soviet Union.
"Jewish New York" includes rare photographs and illustrations of pre-20th century New York Jewry, and celebrates the city's chutzpah, humor, and wines "so thick you can cut them with a knife." The book lovingly explores Jewish New York's neighborhoods, food, cultural contributions, labor struggles, philanthropies, and glorious synagogues. Also included are a map of the community and a glossary of Jewish-American terms.
