| The novel, despite the blurb! -is about a woman who CHOOSES to fixate on childish dreams, flying in the face of all evidence. She is too self-focussed to see life's truths. The novel is constructed as a parallel narrative: her life and her death unfloding almost simultaneously.
My rational for that is that we often carry the seed of our death within our life.
Reviewers have misinterpreted this as a flashback. It is not.
The novel is a black comedy with numerous crazy incidents, but is ultimately pathetic. Or the main character is.
Writing a character who shows little personality growth, and irony sustained thoroughout the book, was a challenge. |
