| The challenges, limitations, heartache and compensatory skills needed by the hearing impaired are explored in this book that focuses on one of the rights of passage for young children. The little boy is hearing impaired. His normal desires, however, are frustrated by his disability. The disability also has impacts his family. The book received praise from national organizations for the hearing impaired for in it, the author attempts to depict the life and challenges faced by the hearing impaired and their families. By focusing on a simple right of passage through which children gain a sense of accomplishment and self-control, the author hopes to help those working with chilren and others with hearing impairment understand the challenges they face. This book is the first in a series attempting to realistically depict the lives and special challenges that confront children with disabilities. All are being written to help the families, friends, professionals and others who interact with such children see the children as they are, normal children whose disabilities both shape and impact their experiences, personalities and lives.
