| Upon returning from her honeymoon, Anita waited two weeks for the maid to come and clean her husband's apartment. At home in Bombay, Anita's mother had had daily maids for as long as she could remember. Her mother also employed a cook, so Anita had never even made tea for herself. Exasperated, her husband was forced to ask his sister to teach Anita how to cook and scrub. That's when the reality of living in America dawned on Anita. She would have to clean the apartment herself, even the toilets, like a lowly servant. Her home might be bright and new, but she was the one who would have to keep it that way. She secretly cried herself to sleep many nights in the first years of marriage.
