I write to present complex technical, scientific and legal information in a way that reaches beyond a professional or expert audience.
I began writing professionally at seventeen. My first paid articles were a series of "species profiles" for the Pennsylvania Fish Commission's Office of Information and Education. Since then I've written for commercial radio, public radio (Earthwatch Radio), educational television and print media.
I've won awards from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Wisconsin Association of Environmental Educators, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Mansfield State College and the Pennsylvania Association of Biology Teachers for my work in environmental science, public involvement and natural history.
I've researched wild turkey biology, wild trout biology, white tailed deer energetics, nonpoint source pollution and aquatic insects as water quality indicators. As an environmental litigation consultant, I've advised on some of the largest environmental cases in the United States, including a Wisconsin case that resulted in a $105 million damage award against a utility company for historic contamintation involving manfactured gas plant wastes.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Mansfield State College, a Master of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Institute for Environmental Studies and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota Law School.
I am an Attorney Editor with West Group and president of Risk Writers, Ltd. an environmental research, litigation and publishing firm. Interests: Environmental science and technical writing, legal writing and science-based fiction, in areas of environmental risk, natural resources and natural history.
