Alfred J. Garrotto is a freelance writer, editor, and novelist. He lives in Martinez, CA with his wife and two daughters. Circles of Stone is his third novel (coming in 2003 from Hilliard & Harris Publishers), following upon Finding Isabella (2000) and A Love Forbidden (1996). The novel represents his second exploration of the realities of international adoption and issues related to it. In Finding Isabella, he examined the subject from the viewpoint of all major stakeholders: adoptee, adoptive parents, the birth mother and her other children (the adoptee's birth siblings), and finally the foreign attorneys who broker adoption of impoverished children. In Circles of Stone, Garrotto continues that exploration. Major themes are (1) the power of a lie to threaten intimate family relationships and (2) the reality that, try as we might to avoid it, we unwittingly relive certain, dreaded aspects our parents' lives (thus coming full circle). As a former Roman Catholic priest and the adoptive parent of two foreign-born children, the author is eminently qualified to address the issues of spiritual conversion and international adoption from an insider's viewpoint.
