Visionary Art
For years, we've been trying to classify, categorize and otherwise describe Amos's
art. Recently, the term "visionary" has been bandied about as a possible
definition: A self-taught artist who creates as the visions and voices in his head
direct. Does this mean he always listens to the little voices? Usually, because
that's when the best art happens. Does being a "visionary artist" mean that he
knows in advance what will result from his brush or nails or saw? Nope. But that's
part of the fun.
Perhaps fellow artist and pal Jacob Preston (Blufffton's tallest and oldest living
potter) said it best: "Amos does Amos stuff."
For the uninitiated, the work is bright and happy, fun and funky, with a
semi-tropical color pallette to reflect the coastal area where Amos has lived since
1980. The zany and sometimes downright weird characters who show up in his pieces
are often reincarnations of real people who have crossed his path.
