My book in progress: In Wake of a Following is my first foray into creative writing; an astonishing true story that takes place in Central Wisconsin post World War II. My family was one of hundreds impacted by a poor, uneducated farm wife that claimed to receive messages from the Virgin Mary. The event forever changed the lives of our devout Catholic family. I begin the story in 1950 when the parish priest asked my Grandfather to investigate the apparitions and to prepare for a large-scale pilgrimage. The spiritual messages were politically based and fed into my grandfathers communist theories. To him, it spoke of the world heading to Hell in a hand-basket, a belief he shared with many fearful Americans during this time. Caught up in the claims, my Grandfather would become the Seer’s chosen one, leaving everyone he loved to lead her mission. My family’s history has been shrouded in silence and shame for sixty years. I am privileged to share this story with others – and along the way, open the healing process.
