I’m a native hillbilly, growing up among the mountains and gorges of the Nantahalas in Western North Carolina. Many of my childhood friends were Cherokee and we walked the trails and climbed the mountains together. About ten years ago, I stood again at the top of the summit meadow on Cheoah Bald and a story popped into my mind. Never having written a word for publication other than technical manuals, I fought the idea long and hard. And lost. So I wrote it down. And damned if another one didn’t pop up before the first one was even finished. So I wrote that one down too. And now there’s another one already born, kicking and screaming. Surely there’s someplace one could go for treatment. I now live with an artist in Upstate South Carolina. She’s as crazy as I. Well, maybe not quite as crazy. I still roam the mountains too, usually by motorcycle. Usually upright, but not always.
