Umesh Kumar Singh Chauhan, born on 9th April, 1959 at Village Dadupur in Lucknow District of Uttar Pradesh, has been involved in several social and literary initiatives, ever since his youth, in Lucknow and Kerala and he has published many articles, stories etc. in literary magazines/ newspapers and three poetry collections in Hindi, titled, 'Gaanth Men Loon Baandh Thodi Chaandni' (Geet-Sangrah in 2001) & 'Dana Chugte Murge' (2004), both published by Satsahitya Prakashan, Delhi and 'Jinhe Dar Nahin Lagta' (2009) published by Silpayan Prakashan, Delhi. He has also published a collection of translated poems of famous Malayalam Poet Mr. Akkitham Achyuthan Namboothiri (2009) from Bharatiya Jnanpith, New Delhi. He has remained continuously involved in the conduct of various cultural and sports events.
By profession, Mr. U.K.S. Chauhan is an Indian Administrative Service Officer of Kerala Cadre – 1986 Batch, who has worked for nearly three years as Agricultural Marketing Adviser & Joint Secretary (Agricultural Marketing) in the Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture in Government of India and as the Managing Director, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED). Prior to this, he has worked as Director for more than two years in the same Department, looking after the work of Plant Protection, Extension, Information Technology and Machinery Divisions. Before joining the Ministry of Agriculture, he has worked as Private Secretary to the Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India for a period of little more than one year.
While working in the State Government of Kerala from 1987 to 1998, Mr. Chauhan has held several important assignments viz. Sub-Collector of Palai, District Collectors of Wayanad and Calicut Districts, Chairman of Malabar Market Committee, Secretary of Kerala State Haj Committee, Director of Scheduled Tribes Development, Director of Kerala Institute of Research, Training and Development of Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs and Director of Tourism. As District Collector of Calicut, he has also held charge of Mayor of Calicut Corporation for a considerable period. In 1993-94, on behalf of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, he participated in the World Ship for Youth Programme organized by the Prime Minister’s Office of Japan as the National Leader of Indian Delegation of Youth.
Besides working in the parental cadre of Kerala, Mr. Chauhan also had an opportunity of working on inter-cadre deputation in the State Government of Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) for a period of five years from 1998 to 2003. During this period, he held several important assignments in Uttar Pradesh viz. Special Secretary in Department of Irrigation, Director of Tourism and Managing Director of UP State Tourism Development Corporation, Special Secretary in Department of Tax and Registration and Managing Director of UP Film Development Corporation and Commissioner of Entertainment Tax.
Mr. Chauhan has done his Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Botany (1979) from the University of Lucknow and Master of Arts (M.A.) in Hindi (1984) from the same University. After Post-Graduation in Botany, he joined research and was working as a Junior Research Fellow/ Senior Research Fellow of Human Genetics in the Department of Medicine in the King George’s Medical College, Lucknow. He left research in 1983 to join as an Officer in the Punjab & Sindh Bank and in August, 1984 he switched over from banking sector to join the UP State Civil Services (Executive), in which, he served for about two years.
