Ward Crockett: A Novel by Ward Crockett (excerpt from Chapter One)
His journey began deep in the earth, in the salt mines of Knox College, located in tropical Galesburg, IL. He toiled for two years as a fiction editor for "Catch," the critically acclaimed college literary magazine, and as an arts/entertainment reviewer and feature writer for "The Knox Student," the college newspaper. One sunny June day, while donning a black robe and strange, square hat he received from a secret society known as the Graduation Committee, Ward Crockett managed to escape the salt mines, stopped only once by an old man who handed him a rolled-up scroll. And for some reason, a large crowd of people cheered his escape. Prison camps these days. Armed with a piano and a B.A. in English Writing, Ward set foot into the strange world. In spite of the great weight of the piano, he insisted on dragging it everywhere he went. "I'm a writer and composer," he told curious parties. "I live the hard life. The romantic life. You know, like Keats. He had to deal with tuberculosis. This is my tuberculosis." "Why don't you get an electric keyboard?" asked a 12 year old boy in Omaha, NE. "I will not give up my burden for the ease of technology!" cried Ward. After trading in his piano for a Casio 450 in Lincoln, NE, Ward continued his journey to his homeland of Colorado, settling in the burgeoning silicon empire known as the Denver Metro Area. Unfortunately, his B.A. in BS wasn't getting him any work. Not to be discouraged, he continued to write his bizarre brands of fiction (non-genre, science fiction, horror) and poetry (rhymed, unrhymed, metered, expired meter). "Why don't you look for writing information and jobs on the internet?" inquired an old friend. "The INTERNET? What is this INTERNET, this monstrous, amorphous, electric mass? This monster of technology?" "You've summed it up quite well, actually." "Ah!" Ward cried. "Ha!" Ward purchased a computer and ventured out onto the Internet. He now produces content for his own web site, www.corpsebooty.com, and he continues to write screenplays, short fiction, poetry, and humor. Not too much humor, though. "After all, who wants to laugh?" Interests: Science fiction, horror, non-genre fiction, poetry, film/video, humor
