Al Bermudez wrote his first book in December 2006, “Sing Sing State Prison, One Day, One Lifetime: which was featured in the Ossining Historical Society Museum and reviews from City of Lakes Lifestyle Magazine 2007, ECO Latino Magazine 2007, Dr. Phillips Lifestyle Magazine 2007, Longwood Lifestyle Magazine 2007, and other Central Florida publishing companies.
On November 25, 2009, he authored and self-published his second book, "Ruins of a Society and the Honorable, ISBN: 978-0578043432.” It’s an autobiography and a story based on real life circumstances. It tells a story of incidents which took place in one day and a half while working at Sing Sing and outside the prisons environment. It then sidetracks to speak of other stories, voice opinions and reflects on his life as a young man growing up in Brooklyn.
The book honor many that crossed paths with him during his lifetime, who inspired him and whose recognition he felt is well deserved. Most of the book is based on prison experiences, other parts of this book relates to the many life encounters we’ve all experienced in our own lives, in one form or another.
An interesting thing about reading this book is; throughout the entire book the actual story will stop with an asterisk, (*) to voice an opinion or explain a different set of circumstances; then it continues onto the actual story with the words, (STORY CONT).
The book is currently being translated into Spanish, and expects to complete within three months. We don't believe there are any Latinos who have authored a book in Spanish, which address a NYS prison in the United States. However, we can assure you that Al Bermudez Pereira is the first Latino Correction Officer in Sing Sing's 185 year history, ever to write a book about the facility. Since the release of the very first copy of Ruins of a Society and the Honorable in January 2010, it has received many good feedbacks from family members, friends and coworkers. Although it has not yet received any professional reviews from local newspapers, media or magazine publications, the following was received:
