I’ve confidently called myself a mother, a wife, a student, a librarian, and probably a dozen or so other titles, but to actually call myself a writer has, up until now been impossible for me. I am a writer. Let me say it again just to feel the shape of the words in my mouth. I am a writer. I wish I could assure myself that the mere act of speaking it magically transforms it into reality, but I still have my doubts.

I’ve been a writer from the time I learned to string words together to form a sentence, longer by far than any other single title I’ve held. I was born a writer and I will die a writer. And yet, if someone were to inquire what I do for a living I simply cannot answer that I am a writer because if I did, the next question out of his or her mouth would be: “Have I read anything of yours?” Is a painter only a painter when she sells her canvas? Is a songwriter only allowed to call himself one when he hears his creation emanate from a radio? I have no answers to these questions and so am reluctant to publicly give myself a title I may not be officially worthy of.

I’ve written fiction within the boundaries of rigid genres, such as horror and science fiction, and nonfiction in the format of essays and anecdotes. There isn’t much I won’t tackle at my keyboard, when the mood strikes, but my heart lies in humor (though I apologize for not demonstrating this fact within the passages of this biography). Humor is my obsession as well as my apparent encumbrance. The market seems slim. Miles stretch between what I love to write and what publishers want to print.

I publish only in my online journal (http://fonda5150.livejournal.com); because people read my entries -- and they smile. Also, I am currently the Women's Issues Examiner for Examiner.com in Buffalo (http://www.examiner.com/x-31538-Buffalo-Womens-Issues-Examiner).
