Professional Profile:
An expert in the teaching of the English language, Professor (Dr.) James Villanueva contributed significantly to the teaching of English as early as the 1970s. As Director of Language Studies, Adult Education Board, Ministry of Education, he was in charge of 40,000 adult students learning English, including Chinese, Malay, Tamil and other foreign languages. This responsibility required him to conduct monthly seminars and workshops with the 400 teachers, 40 supervisors of 40 centres in Singapore. He conducted numerous workshops locally as well as overseas in the teaching of English as a first, second and foreign language.

Professor (Dr.) James Villanueva played an important role in preparing the then Nanyang University (Nantah) for the merger with the then Singapore University. Recognizing his professional skill as an Educational Theorist and Practitioner in Applied Linguistics, he was directed by Dr. Lee Chiaw Meng, former minister of Science and Technology and Education to develop English at the Language Centre of Nanyang University and the English Language Proficiency Unit of the Singapore University.

Countries other than Singapore benefited from his expertise; he was instrumental in the implementation of English in Malay and Chinese schools in East Malaysia. He was also Education Officer in East Malaysia concerned with the implementation of English in Malay and Chinese schools as well as trained the local teachers in the teaching of English. He was a lecturer of English at Nanyang University and at the National University of Singapore. Training local teachers in the teaching of English was part of his responsibility. He also trained teachers from Thailand.

Other than this, Prof. Villanueva’s “students” included Nuffield specialists, Peace Corp volunteers, UK’s Volunteer Service Organization teachers, the Police Academy officers from the rank of inspectors and above. He also ran specialized programmes for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Health.

The J. Villanueva’s English Language Centre is where English language teaching methods have been refined through his experimental programmes. The results have proved that the methods used are relevant to the competence upgrading, command and performance in the language.

Prof. (Dr.) James Villanueva has a Ph.D in English (USA), Ph.D in Humanities – Creative Writing (Hawaii) and Psycholinguistics (USA) and conducts a number of workshops locally as well as overseas in the teaching of English as a first, second and foreign language.
