After five generations in Palestine Fredís family moved to Scotland in 1948 where he was raised and schooled. His multicultural experience began at sixteen years old when he embarked on a three-year tour of Europe and North Africa, working, learning, and associating with a wide variety of peoples. His activities during that period included well digging in Greece, carpentry in Holland, street vending in Spain and vagabonding in North Africa. After moving to the USA in 1972 he began a series of building construction businesses including a house painting cooperative. During this period he was also president of a food cooperative in Philadelphia, and lived in cooperative housing. In the 1980s and 90s Fred divided his time between the USA and Israel, becoming involved in a variety of activities including disaster reconstruction after Hurricane Andrew in Florida in 1993, establishing a record company and music publishing house, and associating with the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions in 1996. During the 1990s Fred also trained and performed as a professional juggler, was a founding member of the Twin Cities CoHousing Network in Minnesota and a Principal of Cultural Gateways International. He moved back to Israel with his wife and two children in 2000 and continued his work towards a just solution to the conflict and an end to the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. Fredís political activism has been expressed through joining food convoys to besieged Palestinian villages, demonstrations at military checkpoints, planting trees for the Bedouin, opposing house demolitions, and rebuilding demolished Palestinian homes. From 2001-2003 he was Operations Manager for The Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, and in 2002 Fred initiated a new organization, Mosaic Communities, which plans to build Jewish/Arab communities throughout Israel. He was awarded a two-year Fellowship grant from the Echoing Green Foundation in 2003 and became the founding Executive Director of Mosaic Communities until 2005 when he founded MadeInPeace.com. Fred lives in central Israel with his wife and two children and continues to take unusually large amounts of time off to travel and write.
