Jan Grieco earned a B.A. from Vermont College, and an MFA in fiction from the University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast Writing Program. She is one of four emerging writers who will be recognized at PEN-New England's 2006 Discovery Evening on March 2 at Emerson College in Boston. She was nominated by Ann Hood, author of Somewhere Off the Coast of Maine, An Ornithologist's Guide to Life, and several other books, and will be introduced by Hood at the event.
Ms. Grieco was a runner-up in the Stonecoast MFA 2004 AWP Fiction Competition, and is a former award-winning journalist. Her fiction has been published in iris; on cracked lenses, an online literary magazine; and excerpted in Portland Magazine, and her nonfiction has appeared in New Hampshire Profiles, Travel-Holiday, Port City Life, Portland Magazine, and on several web sites.
She is on the Board of Trustees of Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, a mentor with MWPA, and a founding member of Simply Not Done, a collective of women writers who present workshops and readings throughout New England, and that appeared as part of the New York City's Cornelia Street Café Mamapalooza celebration of mothers, sponsored by Family Circle in May.
Ms. Grieco is an adjunct instructor in English composition at the University of New England, and an adjunct instructor in English composition, literature, and gender and politics at Southern Maine Community College.
She lives in South Portland, Maine, with her husband and a pair of speckled German shorthaired pointers, and is currently completing a novel.
