"You know..." the speaker paused, making several clockwise rotations of his right hand near his mouth as if to bring something out of it, "Spark... I dont know... spark!"
I dont blame him, the "spark" that he mentioned is a very vague word to define. Life itself is somewhat vague with abstract thoughts moving across, and feelings that you cannot grasp. To be able to communicate these effectively, in addition to having a vivid imagination, and to be able to empathise with your characters on their own feelings is what I believe to be the strength of an author.
My name is Laxmi and I am currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Engineering. I used to write opinion articles in the newspaper back in Jakarta (where I am from). I have written several short stories, and am thinking of starting a novel. I have passed my stories around my friends who have commented on them. Based on these comments, I would like to take a further step in my writing by joining this community.
A scene I witnessed a few days ago gives me an idea of what 'spark' could mean. When you try to jump into an open lorry, there is a small amount of time when both your legs are in the air. At that point, you are flying, the evening breeze is blowing against your face. There is an overwhelming sense of release in knowing that there is no law of science that keeps you fixed to your position, and no law of society that binds you from commiting this action. Your two feet finally reach their desired position. You are still elated with the experience, and the joy in your heart has yet to subside. When such acts, so simple and finite, can give you a tremendous amount of joy, and when your mind is unbounded and open to the idea of happiness, that is a beautiful state... what I believe to be a spark. Interests: Writing stories, poems and opinion articles, dancing, singing, drawing, oil painting.
