I was born in the River Bend of Seminole County, Oklahoma, in the middle of the Jazz Age and grew up in the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression of the 'Thirties. Since I was a boy of twelve I have been a 'writer' (beginning as a gossip columnist for the Konawa (Okla) Leader newspaper. I was a radio operator on a wooden subchaser during WWII, served later in the Coast Guard (late 'Forties, early 'Fifties), completed the B. A., M. A., and Ph. D. degrees (in English), taught college English for thirty years, published fourteen books, sold the movie rights to two books, wrote the screenplays for Madam President and The Hooligan Navy. I am married to Sharon Goforth Hardendorf Phares (Wright) and live on a weed farm in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
