Mark Callanan was born in 1979 in St. Johnís, Newfoundland. After completing a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, he lived and worked in Leeds, England, for nearly two years.

His work has appeared in various journals across Canada and in the United Kingdom and was recently anthologized in The Backyards of Heaven, a collection of Newfoundland and Irish poetry. A selection of his poems is due to appear in Breathing Fire II, an anthology of the new generation of Canadian poets, edited by Patrick Lane and Lorna Crozier. Scarecrow, his first full-length collection, was released in 2003 by Killick Press.

He is the regular book reviewer for the Newfoundland newspaper, The Sunday Independent. He lives in St. Johnís.

Interests: English and Irish poetry, poetry in general, world mythology, Newfoundland history and culture.
