With the “diaphanous-blue” Caribbean sea as a backdrop, it is no wonder that Barbadian writer, Sandra E. Morris, is inspired by walking along one of her favourite metaphors-the sea-on her island home Barbados!
In a phrase she describes herself as a “Canadian-Barbadian raised writer clutching an English birth certificate emerging from her chrysalis.”
The freelance journalist/ editor, award- winning creative writer and the second Co-ordinator/ Web mistress of VOICES: Barbados Writers Collective-one of the most visible and vibrant writers groups on the isle and the Caribbean-networks and shares on a regular basis with writers’ groups around the globe.
She is the Ringmaster of the Caribbean Writers' Webring. (http://f.webring.com/hub?ring=caribbeanwriter1)
Sandra is also the Cultural Officer-Literary Arts for her country Barbados' National Cultural Foundation (http://ncf.bb)
Sandra’s experiences and travels influence her work-articles for national newspapers, international magazines and business newsletters; national acclaim for award winning plays and her award-winning poetry published and anthologised locally, internationally; in cyberspace and recorded on radio.
The West Indian Aquarian is currently working on her first spoken word CD. She has received an Honourable Mention in her island's most prestigious literary competition, the Frank Collymore Literary Endowment 2001 for her first collection of poetry, yet to be published-CHRONICLES OF A SEA WOMAN.
Literary influences? “My taste is eclectic. I am inspired by D.H, Lawrence, Shakespeare, Naipaul, Angelou, Kamau Brathwaite and many of our contemporary West Indian writers like Dana Gilkes, Katy Gash and Edwidge Danticat.”
