Yorghos Kontaxis

Athens, Greece

Home page:

I was born on the island of Syros, in Greece. I was a stage actor from the age of nine untill twenty one. My father gifted me my first camera on my seventeenth birthday. I believed back then, I would be a stage actor for the rest of my life. Fate brought me to New York. I escaped from a military junta government in the late 60's that persecuted artists like myself. I arrived in New York May 15, 1969. In a very short time, I fell in love with photography. I received my BFA degree from the School of Visual Arts in 1975. Upon graduation I was appointed Head of the Photography Department of the Stamford Museum, in Connecticut. In 1978, I became a member of I.A.T.S.E., as a production still photographer on movies and television productions. Since 1973, I have been exhibiting in galleries and two museums. I have earned four awards in photography and two grants. Presently, my free-lancing photography covers weddings, corporate events and productions. Some of my ideas poured out of me as screenplays since 1998. I am now in pre-production for three of my stories; "Two Loves", "Defying Gravity" and "The Dragon". I am highly skilled with a natural born talent for composition and capturing moments that evoke emotions in the viewer. My whole purpose, as an artist, is to touch people on a large scale.
