My writing career began with a school newspaper I started in the seventh grade. Along the way I've had award-winning stints as reporter and editor for newspapers in New Jersey, South Carolina, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Non-work activities include 17 years as a volunteer firefighter, 13 years as a living historian specializing in the Civil War, and occasional odd jobs as a movie extra. My favorite authors include Stephen W. Meader, Alexandre Dumas pere, Ambrose Bierce, Stephen King, William Faulkner, Kurt Vonnegut, Joseph Hillerman and Robert Parker. Favorite books include "The Unvanquished" by Faulkner, "Count of Monte Cristo" by Dumas and all the wonderful young adult books of Stephen W. Meader that made weekly trips to the county library so worthwhile as a kid. My writing goals are simply to tell people interesting things they didn't know or realize about people and events they thought they knew all about -- to give readers an "Aha!" moment, whether through ephiphany or by providing undiscovered information. After decades making a living as a journalist, I am attempting to realize a lifelong dream of making a living as a novelist. I am a proud native of Cape May County, N.J., with a long Piney heritage. I am married to Sheree Burger Watson and have three children and two grandchildren. "Brother William's War," a novel based on some real Civil War history out of Chester, S.C., is now available POD through my startup publishing company and is available online at www.brokenlanceenterprises.com, at The Book Rack in Rock Hill, S.C., and at the Regimental Quartermaster in Gettysburg, Pa. Plans for additional novels, and for republishing some out-of-print journals by Civil War soldiers, are in the works.
