In 1972, after 10 of scrimping and saving, she had enough money to buy a portable JC Penney’s typewriter. She wrote her way through the next 20 years, returning to graduate work in US History, after taking 17 years to complete her BA. She quit grad school when her thesis topic, “A Conceptual Analysis of the Relevance of Concrete Chickens in the Southern Yard,“ was rejected by her committee.
