More than twenty years ago, my senior English teacher urged me to enter the University of Tampa essay contest for young writers. I declined. There were many other things occupying my young mind at that time, none of them contributory to positive growth and well being.
Through the intervening years, I have often thought about the folly of that decision. Out of all the bad decisions I have made in my life, that one stands out as the choice I regret the most. I have resolved to erase that regret.
With resolution comes purpose. However, direction does not always follow purpose, as it should. Thus, my appearance at Writers.net.
Those twenty-odd years ago, a teacher saw something in me that indicated a talent for the written word. Yet talent does not naturally equate to achievement. What I seek at this venue is direction; a way to take the raw metal that is my writing talent (in whatever amount God has granted me) and forge it into something cohesive and beautiful.
I would show those who doubted me, including myself, that I can succeed. More importantly, I would show my children that it is never too late to catch your dreams.
