Laraine Anne Barker writes fantasy for young people. The Obsidian Quest, book 1 of her Quest for Earthlight trilogy, will soon be available (in both paperback and e-book) at http://www.hardshell.com. The Little Dragon Without Fire can be found (as a short chapter e-book) at http://www.diskuspublishing.com/littledragon.html. Hard Shell will also be releasing the other two Earthlight books, Lord of Obsidian and The Third Age of Obsidian.
The Obsidian Quest was shortlisted in the Dream Realm Awards, YA division, 2001.
The Little Dragon Without Fire won the fantasy prize in a short-story competition (called the Turangi Ripping Good Read) in 1997 and a novel called Silvranja of the Silver Forest was shortlisted for the Tom Fitzgibbon Award in 1997/98. Unfortunately, only the winning title gets published, the winner in that year being 2MUCH4U by Vince Ford.
For the rest, Laraine lives with her husband and four long-haired miniature Dachshunds (not to mention a flock of white fan-tailed pigeons) on a 5-acre block sandwiched between two dairy farms in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand. Her husband farms beef cattle, though strictly as a hobby that makes a little money as well as filling up the freezer.
You can find out more about Laraine (and her dogs) on her web site, Fantasy for Children and Young Adults, at http://lbarker.orcon.net.nz, which also features excerpts from all her books, some complete short stories (including a downloadable e-book), a page on Harry Potter and another on Enid Blyton, help for creating your own web site (including a link to a fun tutorial), some simple recipe treats for the family, and lots more.
