While working as an acquisitions editor and translation-checker for two tokyo-based publishers (books served include: levi: periodic table, lopez: winter count; lovelock: gaia), 7 of my own bks were published between 1984 -1991, including han-nihonjinron (anti-japanology), eigo-wa konna-ni nihongo (english is that[italics] japanese) and goyaku-tengoku (mistranslation paradise). All were well-received and reprinted. Two were national library selections.
Returning to the USA after 20 years in Japan, I failed to find a publisher for RISE, YE SEA SLUGS! (a 500 page book with almost 1,000 holothurian haiku, translated from Japanese and notes on almost every page) and half a dozen other largely finished books, mostly spin-offs from a twenty-book haiku almanac (saijiki), the most ambitious undertaking in translated haiku since since Blyth’s. So, I became a publisher, myself in 2003. Seven books, with almost 3000 pages, have been published to date.
