As a child, I had to hide to read. In my home, reading was considered a waste of valuable time. My favorite place to read was on the tin roof of the horse barn, under the branches of a chinaberry tree. There I could hide and yet keep an eye out on my small world.

I began writing seriously in high school after my peers laughed at the anecdotes in one of my short stories. From then I took creative writing classes in community colleges and universities. Several of my short stories have been published in magazines, newspapers, and anthologies. My first novel, "NUTGRASS", is available on line and at local bookstores. "NUTGRASS" deals with a young man's desire to pull his family up out of the depths of poverty by any means available including going outside the law. A few weeks before he turns fifteen, he joins "The Society", the largest moonshine operation in the foothills of North Carolina. For five years he hones his skills and relies on his with and cunning to out drive, out maneuver, and out think every moonshine riveal in Murdock County. Now he wants out, but learn, too late, just how deadly "The Society" can be.

I chose the word nutgrass for the title of my novel because, according to "Guinness World Book", it is the worst weed in ninety-two countries. This weed grows from a blub that has roots described by some farmers and gardeners that "go straight to hell". From the blub, shoots emerge from which hundreds of more weeds grow popping up all over a field. The ideas that my chracter has can be described just like this weed. Even though he thinks he has rid himself of these ideas, a word or an incidents causes them to pop right back up in his mind.

I am currently working on my second novel "MILL VILLAGE ROAD", a sequeal to "NUTGRASS".
