I used to write copy to live. Now I live to write about spiritual discovery and growth.
I started writing professionally in 1978 as a copywriter for a large ad agency in Cape Town. Bad grammar and spelling notwithstanding.
Within two years, I had switched to freelance copywriting and, unable to read or write a note of music, I tackled the commercial music industry head-on, writing, performing and producing many memorable radio & TV commercials and corporate themes - some even winning local and international recognition. I've recently produced two meditational CDs which are selling in small quantities in one or two local music stores.
I've also designed, manufactured and exported my own automotive electronic systems to Europe and for local consumption. This broad field of expertise lends a unique insight into many aspects of many issues from many angles.
I love writing children's fiction and often use a fairytale environment to address adult motivational issues - since that is my passion. I also write poetry and the odd short story. While in the ad agency environment, I came to see myself as more of a commercial sniper than just a wordsmith, being provided with all the necessary intelligence and strategic data on my target market and left to simply take the cleanest shot possible. In my opinion, commercial advertising is using a powerful tool for psychological manipulation on a mass basis - in the wrong direction.
Now, as a motivational writer, the rehabilitated sniper is using the knowledge and experience in a positive, personal empowerment sense. Often laced with squirming cynisism, my stories and perspectives rip uncomfortably into hidden truths and expose deeply rooted misconceptions.
By definition, then, I'm a facilitator of truth and vision, addressing the mysteries of life and giving direction to otherwise misdirection.
