Born in Matamata, New Zealand, at an early age I became an avid scuba diver and developed a deep interest in the Kriegsmarine. Combining the two in 1998 I moved to France to live close to the Brest U-Boat bunkers where I also became the President of the Brittany Marine Research Society dedicated to the discovery and survey of German Second World War wrecks. Now living in Portsmouth, England, I am a member of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum’s Archive Group specialising in U-Boat and Kriegsmarine research. I have had seven books published (as of August 2006): 'First and Second U-Boat Flotillas' by Pen & Sword and 'U-Boat War Patrol - The Hidden Photographic Diary of U564', by Greenhill;'Hitler's Grey Wolves - U-boats in the Indian Ocean' - also bt Greenhill, 'Weapons Of Desperation' and 'U-boats in the Mediterranean' by Chatham Publsihing, and a a portion of the multi-authored 'Hunt and Kill; U-505 and the U-Boat War in the Atlantic' by Savas-Beatie. So far I have also had books translated into Italian, German and Finnish.
I have contributed to specialist journals as well as undertaking consultancy work for, amongst others, the BBC and St Edmund’s Hall, Oxford’s Emden naval library collection. Interests: Second World War history, particularly related to the Kriegsmarine and its U-boat service.
