I've always been a writer. My mother pulled a keepsake out of her collection to show me. It was a bundle of lined papers bound with twine. Across the front was written "Jeff's First Book, Aged 4." On the inside there was a bunch of cryptic scribbling in crayon. I'm not sure what I was writing about, but I seem to put some effort into it.
Writing has been part of my life ever since.
I've spent the last 6 years as a teacher at Starr Commonwealth Schools, a facility for troubled boys. My BA is in Science and Social Studies for Secondary Education, and was awarded by Olivet College. I've also taken courses at Western Michigan University towards a Masters degree in teaching children with emotional impairments. I also have extensive credits in the field of Anthropology, both social and biological.
My education doesn't end there. The following is an abbreviated list of some of the skills I've either attended training for, or taught others in trainings:
*indicates I've facilitated these trainings to others.
*- Developing long range plans for organizations and departments.
*- Peter Senges 5th Discipline concepts.
*- Mental models in corporate organizations.
*- 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
*- Organizational leadership.
- Applied Political Science at the Federal level.
- Life Space Crisis Intervention
- Total Crisis Intervention
*- Choice Theory/Reality Therapy.
- IDEA legislation, Michigan Special Education Laws.
*- Current Brain Research as related to behavior, education, and delinquency.
- Advanced methods for addressing reading difficulties in children.
- Advanced use of Groupwise, Outlook, and other communication and scheduling software.
Many of these trainings involve an understanding of advanced principles in applied psychology. I was amazed to find how much this related to writing, particularly in marketing.
My first novel, a suspense thriller called Deadly Bytes, is represented by my agents at BAWN Publishing. My second novel, accelerated should be in finished manuscript form by late fall. You can see excerpts from both works at my fiction sample page.
I also have several non-fiction projects in the works. Here's just a few of the topics: humor/philosophical essays, communicating with children in crisis, management through empowerment, goal planning for organizations, teaching tips, job interview tips, classroom management, and science for everyday living.
On a more personal side, I enjoy reading, golf, computers, movies, and of course- writing.
Oh, by the way, I don't bind my work with twine string anymore, but I still put a lot of effort into it.
