Nihad Sirees (novelist and screenwriter, Syria, b. 1950 Aleppo) is a civil engineer who lives in the ancient city of Aleppo, which is the setting and inspiration for his writing which explores themes in modern Syrian history through the lives of his characters. His novels include Cancer (1987), The North Winds Parts 1 & 11(1989 and 1993), A Case of Passion (1998) and Noise and Silence (2004). He has written a number of television drama series, including the widely acclaimed Silk Market set in Aleppo during the politically tumultuous 1950s which has been seen by audiences throughout the Middle East, Germany and Australia. He has also written award winning children’s television dramas. He is currently working on a drama series about the early life of the Lebanese-American artist and poet Kahlil Gibran.
