I am a self-published author of children’s adventure books, The Thirteenth Box and The Face of Sam. The books are the first two in my Smugglers' Town Mysteries series. They are fast-paced adventures and are aimed at the 9+ age group.
Set in 18th Century Hampshire, they appeal to boys and girls. Since publication The Thirteenth Box is being read in schools and is used in a secondary school as a set text in literacy classes, something of which I am most proud.
I have a love of history and the books have a historically correct context, so those reading the books will find out about life at the time; food, clothing and some very smelly bad habits! But they are not history text books, they are exciting and 'un-put-down-able'.
Despite having been published in 2011 The Thirteenth Box is still selling well. It was runner up in Writing Magazine / David St John Thomas Trust Self-Published Book of the Year competition 2012. The Face of Sam was published last November and has been equally well received.
I am struggling to write number three in the series. Not because I have no ideas, on the contrary I have more than I can keep up with, I am getting bogged down with the sales, marketing and accounts side of self-publishing.
However, I feel it’s a shame that the books are limited to my resources and capacity to spread beyond my locality. Therefore I would welcome approached from publishers and agents.
I have been writing all my life and professionally by working in Public Relations for 20 years. I am a full member of The Society of Authors and a full member of The Society of Women Writers and Journalists.
