Stefan Dill is primarily a guitarist/composer/improvisor based in the New Mexico/Texas/Oklahoma frontier. He is also an essayist and poet, and recently began work on a novel.
He received a Masters in compsition at New England Conservatory, studying with Joe Maneri. Returning to his native New Mexico, he developed the unique solo acoustic vocabulary for which he is best known, exploring bridges between free improvisation and traditional early flamenco. He has performed solo concerts at such venues and festivals as the FMP Total Music Meeting ( Berlin 1994), Zuid Nederlands Jazz Festival (Eindhoven 1995), Nickelsdorf concert season (1995, 1998), International Guitar Festival of Great Britain ( Wirral 1997), Paderborn Gitarrenfest ( Paderborn 1998), V Festival Hispanoamericano de Guitarra (Tijuana, 1998) and many others. He has also released two solo CDs:"Warning Clothed in Bright Robes of Dawn" (Centaur 2222) in 1994, recorded live at The Outpost, followed by "Sangre Del Rio" in early 1998, reflecting a deeper flamenco involvement. In 2000, Zerx records released "Flower and SONG", a collection of improvised duos with various partners, with Dill on electric and acoustic guitars. CURRENT PROJECTS Dill's current focus is a return to the electric guitar. He has launched the high energy purely improvising "post-fusion/freejazz/metal" STEFAN DILL TRIO with Dave Wayne (drums) and Dave Nielsen (bass), with a debut CD scheduled for release fall 2001 on the Falcata-Galia label. Also slated for fall 2001 is the development of a second trio project with Peter Broetzmann and Michael Wertmueller. This project as well as ongoing Stefan Dill Trio material will be released through 2002 on Falcata -Galia. He is also an active and enthusiastic participant in the post-country explorations of Mark Weber's Bubbadinos, and Deane's remarkable collective, Out Of Context.Long range projects are the score for "Dunkelstof", a multimedia post-opera by Steve Monroe, and reconnecting with dance aspects he explored while in Boston.
