Re: authors doing their own marketing & PR

I'd like to put my two cents in this discussion from the viewpoint of a reader. I have no experience as an author. I view many books on websites that I might be interested in. The plot is hyped up, the rave review are fantastic, but I never buy one. Why? Because I never buy a book unless I can read at least the first page, even at the bookstore. I don't know these people who are hyping and raving, they could be paid. So how about you self-publishers putting a tidbit of your novel on the website so I can see if you really can write. I am much more interested in that than some fantastic plot.

I've got to agree with Sheila, as both a reader and an author. Like her, I never buy a book I haven't read a bit of. The quality of the writing trumps everything else for me. So, as an author, the first thing I did with my website was to put up some excerpts from my book.

We just launched a site: www.bookhitch.com

It's kind of like a book search and link referral site. It's free for a basic free listing (and you can do as many of those as you'd like).
