Suzanne, I can tell you that you are not alone by any means! I've had sixteen books--non-fiction as well as novels-- published by mainstream publishers. I burned out after my 12th book--all of which had been written in ten years. Recognizing this as inevitable to people in the creative arts, I was able to switch over to editing and photography, as well as theatrical directing--thus continuing to remain creative...but with other people directly involved. I always have hated the isolation required by the discipline of book writing, so this alternative creativity helped me enormously. During my non-writing months, I winnowed my list of projects to the ones I really wanted to work on and write. I finally started to write a proposal I had been researching for several years, found a new agent, and got writing again, but at a less-frantic pace. I do believe in burnouts but I believe they can be healed. As for changing genres or categories, I strongly encourage you to jump in wherever your brain takes you. I went from writing books about medical conditions to a book about Infidelity & Marriage to an incediary biography of a particcipant in the American Revolution, to a book about Nazi fugitives in South America. Good luck, and e-mail me if you want to talk more about it. brbotm19@skypoint.com

In January I signed my first agency contract for my first novel. My agent has been in the business for a number of years, and I understand has been quite successful. As this is a first for me, I'm wondering how often is too often to contact him. I don't want to be the client from hell, but by the same token, I am very interested in finding out how the manuscript has been received. Any thoughts for a novice?

I too searched for a writers chat room on the net that dealt with the issues of writing and poetry. I came across a chat room I really enjoyed and then suddenly they announced that they needed money from me to afford keeping the chat open and accessible. Well, I went to TalkCity and found two chat rooms that deal with poetry, writing and art. Those are Literatzi and Art City, both listed in the channels list at TalkCity. Now today I have applied for my own chat room for writers, Published and Unpublished for this reason. I want to talk about the writing processes, no matter the gendre, poetry and also the marketing issues of selling the finished product. I want a place to share, where writers want to talk about writing and not fall into a lot of immature conversation with people who do not enjoy writing as a possible career. I like to kid around and chat and I have a great sense of humor but when I ask a question about writing I am speaking seriously and have ran into too many people who want to joke around at the wrong time or just simply don't care about writing as the room would indicate.So...I hope to have a chat room up and running in a few days. If so it will be listed at TalkCity as one of the two following chat titles.Writer's Choice or Writer's Homebase. I'm waiting for the approval now. Also you can view my home page at TalkCity at this address.<http://home.talkcity.com/KarmaWay/tumac> Come and visit and join in the serious chat for writers...when we're done being serious we'll laugh a little. All writers will be welcome. Writers Net is the best site for writers. I love it here too.

James Gilbert: When John Grisham's agent took on his first novel, he told Grisham to go to work on his second novel, and not sit around waiting to hear from him, he'd do the selling job, Grisham could do the writing job.' Grisham listened to him, and went to work. The agent sold the first novel "A Time to Kill" which didn't sell very well, but while he was waiting for news from his agent, Grisham wrote "The Firm" and the rest is history and millions of $$$... If your agent is reputable, he'll call you when he has news for you, and not before. Get to work on that second novel and be distracted...

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the creative juices flowing again? I started typing a story on my computer and on the typewriter and each time I have been interrupted in writing these stories and have tried to go back and pick up where I left off, but the same feelings or ideas are not coming back in the same vein and it's not coherent or relevant to those original story lines. Well, anyway, my E-mail address is CHud838300@aol.com feel free or obligated, chained down to the ground, but write and tell me what you think...No, don't send me ads for porno, I will put a curse on your computer, your family (if you have 1), your dog, I will even make you think that your Mother-in-Law looks like Christie Brinkley, so that you will have wild and perverted fantasies about her and get sick and throw up when you realize it was just your M-i-L. Your pal, Dale.
