So I went back to the beginning and took another run at this. 11,000 words in, our hero is now a 17 year old squire looking for a new master (his previous one died), but he still manages to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's much less confident than his previous incarnation, which makes his interactions with the other characters rather more interesting. The heroine (who is about to appear) now has the opportunity to take a more active role in her own rescue; previously, she was a relatively passive character. I think I'll stick with this approach and see where it takes me. Once I get the rescue underway, the rest of the tale should follow fairly closely to the original, which will speed things up a fair bit.

This revision does affect how the plot unfolds in the second book, though, so I'll have to rethink how a mere squire gets himself involved in the doings of the royal family. First things first, though...

Ah, the perils of youth and inexperience...
