    Post Punctuation of abbrieviated names.

One of my characters is named Nick, Jr.

His family has shortened that to N.J.

The editor of my first draft removed periods at every mention of the name.

The editor of my final draft has reinserted them. I sort of preferred the name without periods. Which is correct?

"N.J." is probably more accurate from a technical perspective, since it is an abbreviation, but "NJ" is fairly common for names: think "TJ Hooker" or "BJ Hunnicutt". I think it's more a question of personal style; just pick one that looks good to you and stick with it.
