Thread: Genre Confusion

    Hi Grace,

Your word count is clearly novella length, particularly if all the "stories" function as chapters and are connected. The premise is interesting. Sounds like you have a mix of "Roshomon", "Go" and a dystopia. As others have indicated, it's tough to pull off a multi-POV story, particularly if you don't have at least one or two "heroes" common throughout each story. Getting to know the characters is difficult, but it can be done. Goodness knows that social media is prepping an entire generation for short form interaction and content absorption, so who knows. Good luck with the piece.

It's not an anthology because that is a collection of stories by different authors. What you have is a novella of linked stories. There are very limited markets for this type of book, due to both its length and structure. I don't know how Wikipedia came up with those word counts, but they're off. An average novel is 70,000-100,000 words. Anything in the 60k range is considered to be very short for any genre other than Middle Grade, which runs in the 30-50k range.

My best advice would be to search Duotrope for novella markets. You should also look at the contests for fiction chapbooks in Poets & Writers. If you enter a contest, you usually don't need a pitch. If you submit to editors/publishers, you will need a pitch, and it will help you to have published some of the stories individually in lit mags.

    Hope that helps.
