Please feel free to comment....Your opinions are valuable to me..."A Way to Play"
A Way to Play
There’s got to be a better way
A better way to play
There’s got to be a better way
A way to play today
Like poker in an old saloon
The cards in every hand
A call, a bluff, that cheating stuff
A six gun takes a stand
Like chess among the willows
Knights at queen’s command
Pawns do all the dirty work
So proudly she may stand
Like checkers on a porch swing
I’ll jump you if I dare
Then king me and I’ll double back
And catch you unaware
Like marbles in a circle white
Too many just can’t stay
Shoot them and then kick them out
Then take them all away
Throw the dice, the same way twice
Or make the seven shine
Just play nice and pay the price
It does no good to whine
The games we play have much to say
About that which we hold dear
They speak to things we treasure
And play upon our fears
The art of war, that one big score
The chance to beat the best
The ego calling all the shots
While compassion takes a rest
This I say, for this I pray
Let the cards fall where they may
Surely, there’s enough in you
To play another day

Stanzas 1, 2, and 4 have a good strong iambic rhythm; good strong rhyme - a, b, c, b; good strong meter - 4, 3, 4, 3. The rest of the stanzas have good rhyme, but the rhythm and meter are nonexistent. Any particular reason for that?
Why did you write this poem?
