    The "as clause"

I've read a few articles claiming that one should avoid use of "as clauses" in fiction writing. Why is it so sinful to use them? What the heck are they, anyway? If they're taboo, what's an acceptable alternative??

Most of the publishers I edit for include this "don't use/cut down on" "as clause" guidance in their instructions to editors. They give two reasons--(1) because "as" is used for several different purposes in text, it should be avoided when it's being used to mean "because" (and they say the same for "since clauses" too) and (2) because we told you so.

"I can't go with you to the circus today, as my monkey is acting up."

I rather suspect the British are more prone to this than Americans are. And it's a major issue with an Australian writer I edit.
