    Re: Publishing ebooks through Smashwords

In my experience Smashwords is a great starting point but also has a few downsides.

It is pretty easy to get up and running, and can be a straightforward (but slow) method of getting your eBook into some of the major retailers.

Negatives include not having the option to format your book to cope with the nuances of the different eBook formats (one file in > The MeatGrinder > lots of files out), and also having to pay double commission on retailer sales.

Also, the Smashwords site does not offer you the choice of adding DRM to your eBook, so you'll need to be comfortable with having non-DRM copies of your eBook readily available.

    Good luck

Good points Matt. I knew about the DRM policy. I think there would be some lost revenue there. Human nature being what it is (or is not), if people can copy something free, they will do so.

I'm an open-source kind of guy. I don't like DRM, and I know that sooner or later it will be cracked. If it can be left out, that's what I'll do.

I'm sitting here trying to figure out what DRM is. Ignorant on this subject, I am.

Digital Rights Management. Think copy protection for books. Evil.

    Thank you, Joe.

I've been thinking about how you can get the money for the cover you want. There are websites for independent filmmakers. They post the information about the project they are starting and anyone who wants to send them a donation toward their budget can do so. People do get money that way. I wonder if they also apply to writers.

A buddy of mine will know the answer. I'll ask.

I'm not sure that's a good idea, but thanx. BTW, I think that if I do go this route, I'll probably use Smashwords as it gets you onto almost all the main ebook venues in one swell foop.

What I like about those sites is that they give people who would like to contribute to an artist - but don't really know how to go about it - the opportunity to help them out. There aren't so many art patrons these days.

But if it isn't your cup of KoolAde, I understand.
