    Publishing ebooks through Smashwords

I just propelled myself into the world of ebook sales (well ... the world of ebooks; we'll see how the sales part goes) and I'm wondering if anyone else has published through Smashwords.com in the past. How did you advertise yourself? Did it lead to notoriety/representation? Did it lead to print?

Also, for those of you who aren't familiar with Smashwords, I'd be happy to share what little information I have gleaned so far.

    "I just propelled myself . . ."

That's as far as I got.

I propelled myself into a headboard once. About broke my damned neck.

    Okay, so maybe twice.

Yes. This is a writing website, Matathew. Post something that indicates you can write, and we won't quit reading after the first four words.

    "Matathew"

Apparently I have re-named you. Sorry.

Please keep us updated on your ebook experience.

I have looked at SW, but I like Amazon (Kindle) better.

I am looking into Smashwords and impressed with the simplicity, and that they distribute to other readers (such as the B&N Nook and Amazon Kindle). Did you format yourself or hire one of the editors? If so, how many $20/hour did it take? Would be interested in hearing your feedback. JP

I formatted myself according to their guidelines in the Smashwords Style Guide. Their system automatically checks for certain broad requirements (not too many returns in succession, paragraphs at 0.3", not 0.5", etc.), then they will review it manually for entry into the premium catalog. Once approved they put your book in the queue for distribution to Apple, Amazon, and a few others. Pretty easy, especially for a first-timer like me.

So far my story has appeared in the Apple iBookstore (besides Smashwords.com). Still waiting on the others.
