    help with manual

    Hello,

I have this project in hand where I have to write a manual for a school. They are going to provide me an index but I really don't have a very good idea on where to start from.

    Can anyone guide me please?
Or , better, link me to a manual of same kind?

    Thank you.

    Re: help with manual

I know this thing looks *huge*

I deleted the parts I don't need help with. I'll cover most of sections discussed above too. I just need some help on how to begin.

    Duh !

    Re: help with manual

    I'm a technical writer.

    1. Go to the person in charge of this project and ask for any existing written documentation. If that person has no written documentation, ask who else might. Ask for any existing graphics and pictures they want in the manual.

    2. After collecting as much written documentation as possible, examine it to see how much of it directly applies to your manual. Sometimes, the name of the author appears on documentation of this kind, but not often. If it does, note the name.

    3. Return to the person in charge with a list of subjects for which you have no documentation. Ask him for names of people who are experts in the subject and might have documentation on it. Mention names of authors you noted and other people you've noted.

    4. After a second round of documentation collection, you'll most likely be left with 5-15 subject areas with no documentation. Go to the person in charge and firm up the names of experts who will either write new documentation for a subject or whom you will interview so you can write new documentation.

    5. When you have documentation for all subjects, edit it for consistent style both in writing and format, and lay it out in manual form. Include graphics and pictures.

    6. Return to the person in charge with a first draft of the manual. In the first draft, you should note all areas of confusion, suggested inclusions and exclusions in both graphics and writing.

    7. After #6, it's pretty much back and forth between you and the client until they're satisfied with the product.

    Generally, that's about it.

This reminds me of the current Geico commercials.

Is taking a job you know nothing about a good idea?

I have finished the whole "Students" section already.

I am going to show that in the next meeting.
I have my fingers crossed. I hope they like it .
