    Website seeking submissions

Raising Hell is a new website featuring humorous and outrageous stories by unconventional parents, or people who have had parents. It is currently accepting short submissions from potential guest authors.

Although it is a relatively new site, Raising Hell has already been featured as a Yahoo.com Pick of the Week and at msn.com and gets strong traffic.

Raising Hell does not pay for stories, but it will include an author bio and link to author's e-mail and/or URL with any published stories. It is also currently holding a Father\'s Day story contest with a $20 Amazon gift certificate first prize (deadline 10 June 2002).

Please visit the site at http://rhzine.com before sending any stories to get an idea of the site's style, and address submissions and inquiries to editor@rhzine.com

    Thanks!

Why should a writer give you storyies for free?

Please don't tell us so we can get noticed. Agents with hundreds, if not thousands of manuscripts rarely have time to peruse the internet looking for new talent.

    Re: Website seeking submissions

I think that most writers write because they have something they want to say. Whether they get paid for it or not is irrelevant. Well, that's what I believe.

Certainly I'm sure that if the only motivation in writing is to get money then it's hardly worth continuing. I write to tell a good story (using my own criteria) and when I have completed the story so I feel I have told my story in the best way I can, and that it satisfies me, then I allow myself to contemplate finding an agent/publisher.

The ultimate satisfaction is not measurable by your bank balance, but in the innate satisfaction of telling the tale well. (Though the idea of a wider audience is attractive!)

So, nobody, I might well give a story away free. If the story is just sitting in my cupboard (or in a computer) it fails the basic test - it isn't giving pleasure to anyone. Who cares whether it makes money or not?

Everyone gives some of their stories out. Rather then let somone else make money from their site with your free stories, why not set up your own site and either give out the stories for free or make a few pennies yourself?

If you want to get the satisfaction of telling the tale well, try this site. They don't pay either, but you can get critiques for free, and they even let you keep all the copyrights. You'll either get your satisfaction or you'll get some possibly good advice on how to improve you telling. That seems like a better use of your story then just giving it away for others to make money on... Your call.

They normally take completed stories, but if you state that your story is 'unfinished' or 'in-progress' you can post it for critique.

P.S. For those of us who are paranoid, the site owner is planning on placing a full Privacy policy up soon, or so they say...

I think it's a must to have a website, if you want to publish without going through the normal channels. If you have a website, then it's a good idea to promote it in any which way. Submitting free articles to a website that offers a free promotional byline with a link back to your site, provides a few more hits, another link or two, and another tick up the search engine ladder.

    Re: Website seeking submissions

I have read through my manuscripts with a view to television or film production. I considered how a producer or director would approach my work with a view to production.

I wanted to begin writing an adaptation from near the beginning of my manuscript - to introduce some of the main charactors in the storyline of my trilogy. Having chosen the second chapter of the first manuscript of my trilogy - MY SHAKING HANDS - I proceeded to write my first draft of my play/screenplay A GOOD MOVE. Having written the script as a comedy-drama, I sent it off to local theatre companies. I was advised that e script was more suitable for film or television production. I then rewrote the script with a film/TV layout and added more comedy to the dialogue. It could prove a successful pilot for a comedy/drama series/serial. My work is now being considered with a view to production. Film and television, radio and the theatre can also help to sell books!

I would be interested to know what others think? Also if you have had your work published or un-published produced, and producers and directors who may be interested, or comment

"They even let you keep your copyrights."

The ignorance level here is appalling. Sorry to be grumpy, but geeze!

ONE NEVER GIVES AWAY ONE'S COPYRIGHT. TO ANYONE OR ANYTHING. NOT AN AGENT, OR A PUBLISHER, ETC.

I think you folks are confusing "publishing rights" with copyright.

They're two entirely different things. Look them up. If you have questions, I'll try to answer them.

You're probably right on that point. Just making a blanket statement like that site does on their page isn't a guarrantee for anyone submitting.

It still looks like a promising site, once they get a real privacy statement up. As I stated, they say they are working on that. or so they say. Time will tell...

I don't post for critiques online myself. I use a local critique group. I get what I want without all the fluff and greed that goes with too many online sites. Especially those who think you have to give up all your rights just by submitting a post...

    Re: Website receiving submissions

I have just submitted a short story to rhzine.com and it has now been posted there, with a link to my site. There is a feedback form at the end of the story so I await with interest for comments (hopefully from younger readers).

It's an excellent opportunity for me to get some exposure for my work - the whole exercise has been uplifting to my spirits as I was suffering battle fatigue, and some months ago decided not to write another word until I sold something.

Ridiculous idea really, but I'm sure many who visit this site will understand. At any rate I've taken up my pen once more -

May I just publicly say "Thanks Miguel" ... and thanks to your daughter Beta as well for her decisive vote of confidence!

I love everything Jim Higgins posts. He's always off-topic, in the wrong forum, and can't spell or punctuate. And he thinks he's going to sell a friggin movie. He probably thinks he'll be watching it someday in the day room with the other retards.
